1.   Troop 72 was founded in  1934  -  in 2009 the 75th anniversary.   Troop 72 was originally called Troop 1 - but there was another Troop 1 at Abington  Presbyterian Church.  When the Willow Grove Post Office rearranged  there were 2 Troop 1's in the same area - so Troop 1  Roychester/Overlook Hills  became Troop 72.

2. Find that on this site - click here.

3 Cradle of Liberty now - was Valley Forge Council.  Philadelphia & the Suburbs joined together  (circa 2000?)  Our Troop was originally Troop 1 --- But  Abington Presbyterian was Troop 1 - so they changed  it to Troop 72 ---- ( later  when 72 had  too many boys - Council  divided 1/2 & 1/2   & the other troop was 720)

4.  The Rems  family - two sons and a dad were Eagles.

5. The only triplets were the Frey boys -  two of whom were Eagles.  The Marins and the Bateman boys were twins and to find all the bothers click here.

6. Ed Holland was 1st Scoutmaster while it was still Troop 1 - Others include ( from someone's memory )  Jack McGuiness -  Earl Grolock   -- Don Orcutt --   Ed Zorn - Joe Fletcher--  Tom Smerke   -- Rick Bateman - Jim Webb   ( if you know others - let us know!)
( Tom Smerke became effective Scoutmaster when he was 18  - Joe Fletcher   was still  listed as official  Scoutmaster  because  Tom was too young to sign on . The troop  soon  became too big - close to 80 kids . So they  formed  Troop 720 & split the boys 50/50 )

7. Roy & Chester they were  Frazier's sons .  The Frazier Farm is where the Roychester  Community house is. Someone thought Roy & Chester also became the builders/developers of  the area...(??)

8. The main house of the estate, on the land  where the  Roychester Community House   now  sits , was the  Frazier family farm - called Overlook Hills .   The farm went from Old Welsh Rd  to the Pennypack Creek and from Huntingdon Pike to 611 .   The main mansion is on top of the hill on Frazier Ave - The Gate house was on Welsh Rd .  The big hill was called Horse's Heaven . Carriage horses were buried there .  5 stage coach lines came together in that area - that's why they built Willow Grove Park there . The Farm where Our Lady Help of Christian's  now sits, was Davidson's Farm - the main  house  of that farm was the house next door to the church .  The Davidson's were active scouters in 72.

9. The Community House was a  barn originally.  Overlook  Hills Farm raised turkeys - as well as having horses.

10. To liven up a training session on a camping trip, scout leaders had  an old wrecked airplane hauled on a trailer  to the camping area.  The boys were to pretend they had been in a plane wreck, that they had certain gear with them and to figure out how to survive.  A Delmont ranger  was asked to invite the local fire dept. to come so it would seem like  a real  re-enactment  -  so  the  fire personnel  put on a training demo for the campers.   The airplane did get quite a few double takes from motorists as they drove up 63  with the fuselage on the trailer.
