EAGLES 1998
Ceremony 3-7-99

Tim Egger, Jason Ager, Alex Bateman and Josh Bateman
On Sunday March 7, 1999, Troop 72 of Overlook Hills, Pa. in Abington Township honored four boys who had achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. The boys, (l to r) Timothy Egger, Jason Ager, and twin brothers, Alexander and Joshua Bateman were honored for receiving the highest award in scouting. To qualify, these young men had a tough course before them. They had to advance through the seven ranks of scouting; Scout, Tenderfoot, Second Class, First Class, Star, Life and Eagle. Along the way they were required to earn 21 merit badges on topics that range from fishing to life saving and to serve in the various leadership positions in their troop. A review of their other accomplishments, in areas such as community service, school performance and civic involvement was also a part of the process. Their final requirement was to plan and execute a significant project that would benefit their community. They rebuilt a covered bridge, enhanced a playground with an educational map, tended to the needs of the elderly and repainted a community center. All four young men currently serve an active role in Troop 72 as Junior Assistant Scoutmasters. State Representative Ellen Bard and Abington Commissioner Jim Ring were among those on hand Sunday to honor the new Eagles. Troop 72 has 3 -5 more boys well on their way to Eagle, which might allow them to boast as many as 7 or more Eagles before the year is out - a tremendous accomplishment for any Troop! In well delivered speeches laced with humorous anecdotes of happenings on their path to this achievement, each Eagle thanked the many adults, scouts and family members who had helped them along the way. The young men have plans to continue their involvement with Troop and will likely become Assistant Scoutmasters in short time.
