Spencer Morgan

On November 29, 2003, Spencer Morgan, of Boy Scout Troop 72, Overlook Hills (Abington), received the rank of Eagle at the Elkins Park Presbyterian Church. Spencer is the 153rd Eagle in the over sixty-year history of the troop.

Since starting as a Cub Scout in Pack 72 at the age of 8, Spencer has been an active participant in all phases of Scouting. Throughout his career he was a regular attendee of meetings, weekend trips, summer camp and several High Adventures. These included backpacking the White Mountains of New Hampshire, canoeing the Allagash Wilderness in Maine, and bicycling Cape Cod, and Niagara Falls and upstate New York. He held most staff positions in the troop, including Senior Patrol Leader, and is a member of the Order of the Arrow. Spencer attended Cradle of Liberty Council Silver Stag leadership training camp and was asked to return the following summer as a staff member.

His Eagle project consisted of rehabilitating the campground at Alverthorpe Park. This involved rebuilding the tenting frames and filling them with soil, sanding & varnishing the picnic tables, and constructing a new trail to the restrooms and covering it with wood chips.

Aside from Scouts, Spencer has been very active in community and school programs. With his Youth Group from the BuxMont Unitarian-Universalist Fellowship he participated in several Martin Luther King Day service activities in Philadelphia. For three years he was a member of the string bass section of the Old York Road Symphony. During the summer of 2002 he volunteered at the Franklin Institute Science Museum in the Computer/IT Department. Through the Abington High School Service Learning Program he spent many hours categorizing donated eyeglasses for the Lions Club, to be forwarded to those in need.

High School activities included principal bassist for the orchestra, being accepted for PMEA District Orchestra four years, and going on to Regional Orchestra two years, and District and Regional Band. He was highly involved with set construction, lighting, stage crew, and pit orchestra for the high school stage productions. Spencer was a member of the National Honor Society and a National Merit Scholarship Finalist. He received his CISCO computer certification at age 17.

Spencer is currently a freshman at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, majoring in Computer Science Engineering and considering double majoring in Chemical Engineering. He is a member of the Cornell University Orchestra. For his years of community service Spencer was awarded a Cornell Traditions Scholarship.
