ENVIRONMENTAL PROJECTS
Our
grassroots efforts are designed to benefit the local community. One project helped make
Abington Township the first community in Pennsylvania to offer curbside recycling of
junk mail and magazines; diverting these heavy materials from costly disposal in landfills
or Incinerators saved the Township valuable tax dollars. In another ongoing project,
members collect used household batteries from drop-off points in local supermarkets and
dispose of the batteries as hazardous waste. Also, Earthright members have sold hundreds
of energy efficient light bulbs to reduce energy consumption and pollution. Another
project promotes the use of recycled paper for printed brochures, such as church
bulletins, newsletters, and programs.
MONTHLY PROGRAMS
Guest
speakers are invited to discuss recycling, indoor air pollution, solar energy, waste
incineration, organic lawn care, and other environmental topics. Monthly program meetings
are free and open to the public.
TOURS
Nearby facilities
are visited: the Abington Recycling Center, North Coventry's Recycling Services, and the
Plymouth Resource Recovery Incinerator.
EDUCATION
Brochures on
environmental topics are distributed at designated sites. Environmentally related talks by
government officials are frequently arranged to communicate local concerns to area
legislators. Members participate in parades to increase environmental awareness.
EARTH DAY AND EARTH WEEK ACTIVITIES
Each year, local events are staged to help area residents
celebrate April 22! Earthright Environmental Awards are presented for outstanding
environmental achievement. In previous years, displays have been set up at local malls
with energy efficient lightbulbs, water efficient shower heads, recycling information, and
"green" purchasing comparisons. Special presentations are scheduled and open to
the public.
