Hosted by the Africana Studies Program at Drexel University and the Sustainable Business Network of Greater Philadelphia

About the Book: In The Green Collar Economy: How One Solution Can Fix Our Two Biggest Problems, acclaimed activist and environmental leader Van Jones embraces the challenges of oil dependence, a sagging economy, and global warming itself, transforming these looming threats into enormous financial opportunities. Jones gives a new voice to a different kind of environmentalism, one deeply rooted in the lives and struggles of ordinary people. It's not about green consumers; it's about green workers and bringing the environmental movement to the working class.

The message of The Green Collar Economy is clear: "Give the work that most needs to be done to the people who most need the work," and solve two pressing problems—pollution and poverty—at once. In turn, you provide people with not just a paycheck, but also a purpose.

Rachel Carson's 1963 landmark book Silent Spring was the pivotal ecological examination of the last century. Now, rising above the impenetrable debate over the environment and the economy, The Green Collar Economy delivers a timely and essential call to action for this new century.

May 20 - 7pm - Doug Tallamy

Doug Tallamy – ‘Landscaping for a Sustainable Suburban Ecosystem’Tuesday May 20  7-9 pm

Penn State Abington 108 Lares

Student center/cafeteria building on Woodland Rd

Earthright hosts:

 Come, Listen & Participate

Doug Tallamy will tell us how we can begin to restore biodiversity to our environment with native plants.  With 150 species of plants and animals already lost from Pennsylvania and another 800 species threatened or endangered, it is clear that we must change our approach to landscaping if we hope to create homes and food for our local biodiversity. Native plants will play a key role in the restoration of our living spaces because only natives provide the coevolved relationships required by animals. By supporting a diversity of insect herbivores, native plants provide food for a large and healthy community of natural enemies that keep herbivores in balance and our gardens aesthetically pleasing. You will learn:

 Why we need biodiversity;

 Why we need to change landscaping paradigms to save biodiversity;

 Why animal diversity depends on native plants;

What a sustainable suburban ecosystem might look like.

Doug Tallamy is Professor and Chair of the Department of Entomology and Wildlife Ecology at the University of Delaware in Newark, Delaware, where he has authored over 68 research articles and has taught Insect Taxonomy, Behavioral Ecology, and other courses for 27 years. Chief among his research goals is to better understand the many ways insects interact with plants and how such interactions determine the diversity of animal communities. His new book “Bringing Nature Home; How Native Plants Sustain Wildlife in Our Gardens” was published by Timber Press in 2007.

April 16 - 7pm - Harold Finigan

Harold Finigan – ‘Our Energy Future’

Can I make a difference? Come and find out

 Wednesday April 16  7-9 pm

Penn State Abington 108 Lares

Student center/cafeteria building on Woodland Rd

Harold Finigan will speak about our energy future - We are at an interesting historical crossroads.  The problem of population growth and unfettered consumption have put a severe strain on our planet. Some say fossil fuel is running out, what are our alternatives? - Are they practial, are they scaleable, are they affordable? What can I do to make a difference?

Harold Finigan was a staff assistant to Congressman Robert W. Edgar from 1978-1984 working on public policy issues. In 1984, he became Founder and Executive Director of Fort Mifflin On The Delaware, a non-profit corporation managing the restoration of the historic fort. In 2006 he joined the Energy Coordinating Agency as Director of Education. While there, he gave over 150 workshops on energy, conservation and global climate change; for which he received a PA Senatorial Citation. He has taught at Wharton Business School on Energy, Business & Global Climate Change.. Mr. Finigan is a member of the citywide planning group tasked by the City Managing Director's office to help reduce GHG emissions in buildings. He has traveled Europe doing research and visited over 500 low-energy buildings. He recently developed a low-cost rooftop mounted solar space heater, intended for low-income homeowners.

"The days of cheap oil are done," Finigan said. "The days of cheap energy are done. So we have to think of different ways to adjust."

Finigan explained.

"Energy efficiency is the most important issue we face today," Finigan said. "And it's up to the future generation to work for energy independence and alternative energy."

Finigan stated his belief that the U.S. was currently engaged in a "Thelma and Louise" energy policy, where the nation is consuming a finite amount of energy at a rapid rate while not focusing on what to do once the source runs out.

"Change is inevitable but pain is optional," Finigan said of our current energy situation.

‘Elements’ Art regarding scientific thinking – from the archaic notions of air, water, fire and earth to the current frontier (see press release below) Abington Art Center 515 Meetinghouse Road Jenkintown, PA 19046 Please Bring a friend!

Elements brings together the work of four women artists who have been individually focused on the interconnections of art and science. Though not stylistically similar they have all made bodies of work related to earth, air, fire and water and sometimes in combination. In early Greek philosophy these four elements were believed to be the basis of all matter. As the theory was expanded upon it became the basis for western thinking about the natural world until the rise of chemistry in the 18th century. The work in this exhibition relate to both the archaic as well as scientific thinking regarding the elements and their properties. http://www.abingtonartcenter.org/gal-garden.html

Dear Friend of Earthright,

I am forwarding this email about free screenings of "An Inconvenient Truth" in Glenside. It is a very worthwhile film. This is a great chance to see it if you missed it in the movie theater. Lauren Steele

From member Carol Boyle:    Friends and neighbors are invited to a free screening of the film "An Inconvenient Truth" at St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Glenside. This award-winning film, featuring Al Gore and the scientific community, was shown this summer in theaters nationally. It presents the evidence for global climate change and outlines actions we can take now to begin to reverse it. If you missed this important film this summer, come see it now. St. Peter's Church is located at 654 N. Easton Road, Glenside, PA 19038. The church is wheelchair accessible. For more information, please visit our Web site, http://www.stpetersglenside.org/

We believe that the first step in changing the global warming story is to make others aware of it. So we hope you will come and invite your friends and neighbors.

PRESS RELEASE:

GREEN IS THE NEW BLACK: The Emerging Urgency of Sustainable Design

An Earthright-Sponsored Presentation at Jenkintown Library on October 25 at 7:30 p.m.

Over the last few years, green building design has emerged from the fringe and into the mainstream. Articles on green buildings appear daily, LEED registrations and certifications are growing rapidly, and newly converted real estate developers and corporate executives proclaim their commitment to building green. In a presentation by Muscoe Martin, learn about the current status of the green building movement and where we can expect it to go in the next decade. Mr. Martin, AIA, LEED, is an experienced green architect and a member of the board of directors of the U.S. Green Building Council, the LEED Steering Committee, and the faculty of the University of Pennsylvania School of Design where he teaches a course on Ecological Design. The founding principal of M2 Architecture, he has managed the design of a number of award-winning "green" projects and is currently working on an environmental education center designed to rely on zero fossil-fuel use and a residence that will recycle rain and grey-water and provide all its power via on-site renewable energy. Mr. Martin lectures frequently around the country on the subject of sustainable design. For more information, contact Paul Macht or Alain Fokam at 215-572-7511.

Exciting Changes Coming!
Abington Township is making changes in the way Roslyn Park looks & functions.  Some of the mowed lawn areas will be converted to native trees, shrubs, grasses & wildflowers in the next few weeks. A volunteer planting day will take place Saturday, Sept 30th 9:00 - 2:00.

What changes you will notice?

§       Some areas of the grass between the creek and the trail will be removed & will turn brown temporarily.
§
Many of the invasive plants & vines will be removed to allow the trees & shrubs to grow healthier.
§
Native trees, shrubs, grasses & wildflowers will be planted in the specific areas  along the  Creek.
§       The Sandy Run Creek will be more stable, less eroded and cleaner as a result of deeper rooted plants
         along the banks.

Penn State Abington and Earthright Honor Earth Day

Earth Day Film & Discussion: “A Civil Action” –
Discussion hosted by Paul Macht, Earthright Co-President.
Information – 215-881-7634

What are you doing to celebrate Earth Day 2006? Penn State Abington’s Green Committee and Earthright, a local non-profit environmental organization, will present the film, A Civil Action, followed by Q & A and an open discussion.

The film focuses on a case involving industrial pollution by two highly regarded corporations, contaminated drinking water, and the deaths of innocent children in New England, circa 1981. The case itself has hundreds of twists and instead of celebrating the law this story is a maddening yet rewarding look at the elusiveness of the courtroom case. Paul Macht, Earthright Co-President, will moderate.

The program will begin at 2:00 p.m. in 112 Woodland Building at the Abington campus. Admission is free.

For more information call 215-881-7634.

2004  WHAT YOU MISSED

Dec 12, 2004

Eathright will be visiting Project EFFECT, the environmentally friendly building built and maintained by SAVE, an environmental group from Souderton Area High School, on Sunday, December 12, at 2 p.m.  The tour will be about 2 hours long.  We will be carpooling from Abington High School, Upper Parking Lot, near the auditorium, at 1 p.m.  We are also trying to get a group of students from Abington High School to go on this trip.  Please call Lauren at 215-542-1456 by Thursday, December 9, with any questions.

Background on SAVE and Project EFFECT:
SAVE (Students Against Violating the Earth) in an environmental group out of Souderton Area High School.  The group's mission is "to promote the preservation of our natural world by encouraging appreciation, understanding, and responsible use of the environment."  Project EFFECT is SAVE's award-winning environmental demonstraton building that the student members had built in 1998 to serve as an educational home for the community and students from surrounding areas.  It has a wide variety of environmental technologies such as geothermal heating and a self-composting toilet.  Project EFFECT is built on SAVE's 7.5-acre environmental center, which includes a wetland system, a bird blind, a sitting area and two ponds, and is located next to Souderton's West Broad Street Elementary School.  Ken Hamilton, an environmental science teacher at the high school, helped found SAVE in 1992 and has been providing the students with leadership all these years.

A group of Earthright members had visited Project EFFECT and the environmental center two or three years ago and found it very worthwhile, which is why we're visiting again!  Older children would enjoy this also.  SAVE's website is
www.save-online.org .

April :
We did not plan a presentation for April.  Rather, since Earth Day is this month, we are encouraging our members to support another group's already planned activity.  Here are two that we suggest:

Earth Day Rally and Walk
Saturday, April 17 - Rally: 1 p.m.   Walk:  2 p.m.
Swarthmore United Methodist Church, 129 Park Avenue, Swarthmore
Sponsored by Sierra Club in partnership with other environmental groups
This is the largest Earth Day Rally in the Philadelphia area.  If you are interested in carpooling to this event, call Lauren at 215-542-1456.

Earthfest 2004
Thursday, April 22 - 9:30 a.m. - 4 p.m.
Temple University Ambler, 580 Meetinghouse Road, Ambler, PA  19002
Sponsored by the Center for Sustainable Communities at Temple University Ambler
This is Temple University's second annual Earthfest.  At this outdoor educational festival, organizations, businesses, colleges, high schools, middle schoools, and individuals demonstrate sustainable concepts and technologies, and provide interactive educational displays, activities and more.  Food, entertainment, and a plant sale offering native and rare plants and shrubs will also be part of the festivities.

March 11, 2004
Timothy Miles, of Juneau, Alaska, will make a presentation that highlights the natural and political history as well as the current environmental threats and challenges of the Tongass Rainforest in Alaska, the world's largest temperate rainforest.  Miles is on a mission to save the Tongass from continued attempts by the timber industry to clear-cut million of acres of old growth forest.
Please  click to see the attached press release for more information.
In addition, the Pennypack Farm CSA, located in Horsham, has asked us to spread the word that they have a few shares available for the 2004 season.  They can be reached at
pennypackfarmcsa@aol.com.

February 5, 2004 We have two topics planned for the night:

1.    Meredith Michaelson of Clean Air Council will speak for 15-20 minutes about the endangered Super Fund that is used to clean up toxic waste sites.  The Fund, which was established in 1999 with money that was accumulated from taxing businesses, is nearly depleted.  Find out what is likely to happen if it is not reinstated.

2.    Abington Township has been targeted in Pennsylvania as a pilot trial township for RecycleBank, a cost effective and environmentally conscious solution to waste collection and disposal.  Find about the state-of-the-art technology RecycleBank employs and the enhanced recycling goals it would achieve.

Meeting is in the  Dean's Dining Room, which is located at the Lares Union Building of the Penn State Ogontz campus.  The Lares Building is on Woodland Road.  It is adjacent to the Solarium/Sutherland Building.  You can actually park in the same parking lot that you would if you were going to the Solarium.  To see the location better on the map of the campus, go to
www.abington.psu.edu

Saturday, October 25  Earthright is kicking off the 2003-2004 season with a trip to the John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge . The refuge, which is 1 mile from the Philadelphia Airport, protects 200 acres of freshwater tidal marsh, and is the resting and feeding area for 280 species of birds, many kinds of mammals and a wide variety of wildflowers and plants.  Our reason for visiting is to see their highly-acclaimed green headquarters building and then to walk the refuge.  We will be meeting in front of the Solarium at Penn State Ogontz (entrance that faces School Lane) at 10 a.m. and then carpooling.  If you are planning on going, please call Lauren Steele at 215-542-1456 or respond via e-mail.

3.  Field Trip to Natural Land Trust's "Green" Headquarters in Conjunction with Pennypack Trust
When NLT built their new headquarters at HIldacy Farm in Media, they paid special attention to environmental impact and sustainability.  From selecting an architecture firm to picking the site location and landscaping to choosing the mechanical system - all were one with the environment in mind.  Join us for a guided tour of the newly completed building that boasts a sensible mix of recycled and sustainably grown building materials, geothermal heating and cooling, Volatile Organic Compound-free carpets, and even counter-tops made of agricultural waste products.  A representative form the architecture firm will be on hand to discuss the project.  Afterwards we'll walk the grounds of the 55-acre farm.  A carpool will leave the Trust at 12:15 p.m. sharp.  Pennypack Trust members: $5; non-members $10.
