Earthright is a local non-profit organization based in Montgomery County. Our purpose is to educate, support and organize individuals, organizations and corporations to promote conservation and efficient, non-polluting systems of resource utilization and waste management. The goal of Earthright is to promote action locally within homes and communities to enhance the global environment which our children will inherit.

Wed Feb 3, 2010, 7–9 pm  WGG meeting - Sustainable Landscaping Join Wissahickon Growing Greener member and Audubon staff member Steven Saffier for a discussion on sustainable landscaping practices and the use of Pennsylvania native plants to attract birds, butterflies and other wildlife. Growing wild edibles in your area will also be discussed. He'll be available to answer your questions and tell you about what Audubon does in our region.

· February 8, 2010  7th Annual Composting Symposium: Backyard, Business, and Beyond: Keynote Speaker: Ken Dunn, The Resource Center, "Composting for a Sustainable Future"This is the seventh composting symposium to be held in Illinois. The symposium is a forum for sharing composting, stimulating the composting market, and bringing composters, educators and business people together so that everyone can benefit from learning about this excellent organic soil amendment.
      The symposium is will provide an excellent opportunity to learn about composting organic materials from national and local experts. The symposium will cover topics ranging from backyard composting for beginners to large scale projects for municipalities or farms. The symposium is open to the public. Educators, farmers, gardeners, and entrepreneurs are all encouraged to attend, there will be something for everyone.
          Following the symposium there will be a vermiculture build you own bin (BYOB) workshop where participants will have the opportunity to learn more about vermiculture and build their own bin suitable for the home or office. 12:30-6:30pm University of Illinois Extension Sangamon-Menard Unit, Springfield, IL. · March 2nd, 2010 Proposed Wind Farm for Western Sangamon County: Sustainable Springfield Public meeting featuring Christopher Nickell, American Wind Energy, Springfield Office, Dove Center, 7:00pm
· “Tapped” on February 9: This movie looks at the environmental damage and health risks created by bottled water. Is access to clean drinking water a basic human right or a commodity to be bought and sold? Forty percent of bottled water is just tap water (so why pay for it?) and two million tons of plastic garbage created by bottled water is in landfills, or worse, in the ocean. This movie will make you think twice before you pick up another plastic water bottle. (SNOW DATE: February 16)
· “Fresh” on March 9. “Fresh” offers a positive look at how farmers, thinkers and business people across America are re-inventing our food system to forge healthier, sustainable alternatives to agri-business. (SNOW DATE: March 16)
    Tickets can be purchased at the Ambler Theater box office or at amblertheater.org/pennypack. Individual tickets are $10.00 and series tickets are $24.00. Show times are at 7:30 p.m. The Ambler Theater is located at 108 E. Butler Avenue in Ambler.

Dr. Karen Weekes, associate professor of English & women's studies
4:00 P.M. - 5:30 P.M., 109 LARES BUILDING
Join us to discuss a series of books on environmental issues, beginning with the seminal Silent Spring by Rachel Carson. From there we'll move to Terry Tempest Williams' exploration of Utah as the site of nuclear testing and soaring cancer rates in Refuge, then to Barry Lopez's award-winning meditation Arctic Dreams. We'll finish with Jane Goodall's Harvest of Hope. Book group dates are January 25th, March 1st, April 5th, and May 3rd. Free admission. Please be sure you can attend all dates before registering. Everyone is going green, so why don't  you “Grow Green?” Add some delicious vegetables and fragrant tasty herbs to your garden and patio or deck containers this year. Diana K. Weiner, will introduce you to the newest plants for 2009 and demonstrate how to combine many different herbs, vegetables and flowers in containers. Learn the tricks of the trade for making useful containers that are edible as well as beautiful.
